Meditation Techniques for Beginners

Meditation is a way or a method through which one tries to focus all his attention to one particular area. This practice has several long term positive effects on a person and some of these include decrease in anxiety, increase in concentration and a feeling of calmness and happiness. Due to these various benefits, many people try meditation but often fail at conquering it as it is difficult to focus all concentration in one area.

Very few people stick to meditation in the long run and most of the beginners give this practice up in the very initial stages. So here are a few meditation techniques for beginners which can be followed to improve concentration and focus.

Meditation Techniques for Beginners

  • Make meditation a formal practice: It is often recommended for a beginner to set aside a certain time frame for doing meditation, even if it is a short period of time. By doing so, meditation enters the schedule in a more formal way and is easier to do.
  • Starting with the breath: It is important to breathe slowly while doing meditation as breathing slow helps in relaxing the muscles of the body, slows down the heart rate and also helps the mind to focus.
  • Stretch before starting:  If one stretches before doing meditation, then he/she can relax his/her muscles and this in turn helps in the process of meditation.
  • Define a purpose: It is always preferable for a person to do meditation with a purpose or goal in mind. It is important to understand that meditation is an active process and to achieve focusing of attention in one area, one needs to have a certain purpose.
  • Notice the frustration creep up inside: It is important for a person to notice the fact that he/she experiences frustration in the beginning while one is not able to achieve 100% focus and attention.
  • Feel your body parts: One of the important things to keep in mind while doing meditation is that you must try and feel each and every part of your body as this practice is very healthy to achieve 100% concentration.
  • Pick a specific room for meditation: Pick a certain room for meditation and it must not be the same room where you study, sleep or eat.

By keeping in mind all these points, a beginner can really work towards a good meditation experience.
